REVERSAL IS BACK!?

One of the most iconic mechanics in all of Fighting Games is the Reversal. Tekken. Guilty Gear. Street Fighter. Just a few titles that remind players, it’s not what moves you throw, it’s what blows you land! Universus has had a long history with the Reversal keyword going back to the days of Soul Caliber 3 and Street Fighter 20 years ago.

Reversal: “Response [Hand] Play this card as a reversal: After your rival’s blocked attack resolves, add this attack to the attack stack (you get to temporarily interrupt your rival’s turn with your attack).”

Returning a blow in the middle of your rival’s flurry is a dangerous weapon to bring back into the game. Let’s see what’s in the arsenal.

Dangerous Territory. Complexity. Power creep. The Design Team isn’t afraid of the challenge. Balancing one of the most broken abilities in this game’s history seems like a needless mountain to climb. I mean, the game is growing. Cards are selling for more than they have since I started. Player counts continue to rise. So, why do this?

Well, to steal a line from Clooney, “Why not do it?” The balance of the game seems to be leveling off after a few missteps with AoT1 & AoT2. The abilities are getting that IP-specific feel back that makes this game feel good to play. With the success of Godzilla and the like, aggressive decks are creeping slowly back to the power they used to wield. Why not bring back Street Fighter with its signature keyword? It’s time to shake things up! I can’t wait to see how these cards play. Until then, I’ll see you on the tables!
