No wasted words here. Let’s get right to defining Universus’ newest card type so we can dive right into the analysis!

Backups! Much like an Asset, Backups can block, build, and NOT be used for checks while in the stage. However, they also can be attacked! Each Backup has a stamina meter. That stamina will deplete as they use their effects or as their rival targets them for an attack (UVS Article: https://uvsgames.com/all-news/introducing-backups)
So, why do we need backups? That’s the question I’ve gotten the most since these neon ne’er-do-wells got revealed. Well, it seems simple to me. Assets are a missed opportunity from an engagement and fun perspective. It’s tough to justify adding an Asset into your deck. When I read my first article about Assets in 2021, they promised to be powerful and worth the added trouble of balance to include them in your deck. But after 3 years, the best Assets have already rotated out. There are a few that make the cut just based on sheer power in their effects, but they often feel shoe-horned into the game, unless you play an Asset character like Mimic.
Backups are a way to give characters an interactive element, without having to give them a character. Who wants to play A Small Titan as their character? … Yea, I know. BUT who wants to have a small army of Titans lurking around the battlefield, adding an element of scarcity of resources (counting your stamina), and powerful yet playable cards. Adding interaction to the game seems like an awesome way to add fun and memorable moments to the game.
At 4-difficulty, the Small and Medium titans are hard to include in your deck. Building a 4-diff on the end of your string could cripple your defenses for your rival’s backswing… but what other Backups lurk just beyond the walls? Until they let us know, I’ll see you on the tables!
